SPIRITSフライヤーkeynote0224 _finalThis event is organized as part of Naoko Saito’s research project, “Philosophy as Translation and Understanding Other Cultures: Interdisciplinary Research in Philosophy and Education for Bidirectional Internationalization” (Supporting Program for Interaction-based Initiative Team Studies [SPIRITS] funded by Kyoto University).

The SPIRITS project was established to pursue questions of philosophy as translation and the understanding of other cultures. This third year of the project has extended its subversion of the center-periphery relation in American philosophy’s sphere of influence. It has encouraged the further participation of women in these debates, and it has amplified the feminine voice in philosophy. This concluding meeting of the year turns specifically to the cultivation of the aesthetic imagination. It is a signature feature of American philosophy that the aesthetic is not taken to be a tidily enclosed category but understood as extending more broadly through experience and, crucially, into the realm of the political. Our meeting extends interdisciplinary connections, in theory and in practice, with a piano recital by Ayumi Hirahara.
